The unconventional side of paid time off

Most everyone wants some time off of work. Whether it is for a vacation, to spend time with family or to grieve properly, most employees strive to find that work-life balance. There are many types of paid time off offered at different companies across the nation. With the push for a better work-life balance, more businesses are offering some conventional and unconventional time off policies. Here are some examples:
Unlimited Time Off
A few larger companies have started implementing an unlimited paid time off policy. These companies offer employees time off without having a balance to borrow from. In an article by WILX, a company in Lansing, Michigan, recently offered their employees unlimited time off. Cinnaire’s CEO, Mark McDaniel, said that he thought it was “nuts” to implement. However, employees are embracing the change, saying that they felt like it took a load off and they were able to take time off when they needed it.
Time off for new pets
Much like parents desiring paid time off to spend with new children, ‘pawternity’ leave is being offered to owners of new pets. According to an insurance pet provider, “almost 1 in 20 new pet owners in the UK have been offered ‘pawternity’ leave by their employers. It could be no surprise that a leading pet food manufacturer is one of the companies that offer’s ‘pawterinity’ leave. In an article about the unconventional leave, Kate Menzies from Mars Petcare-Manufacturers said, “Dogs and cats are at the heart of our business and our policy is designed to embrace a culture that is passionate about pets.”
Much like ‘pawternity’ leave, there is a growing movement for time off to care for a sick or deceased pet. There are laws set in place for caring for a sick parent, child, or spouse, but very few for the family pet. In a SHRM article by Allen Smith, an attorney, Scott Watson, was quoted saying, “Because time off to care for pets or mourn their loss is important to people, employers should consider adding pet-related leave provisions to their leave policies, particularly if some pet leave is being granted anyway.”
Volunteering to rebuild homes, volunteer at the hospital, or a shelter, shows a sense of character for a person. This is shown equally in a business who supports their employees in giving back to the community and giving them paid time off to do it. In a Fortune article titled Giving Workers Paid Time off to Volunteer Will Help Your Company Succeed, Elizabeth Stocker, a consultant at Great Place To Work said, “When employees are actively involved in giving back it can lead to a deeper commitment and connection to the work.”
