Problem: Insufficient Permissions when launching the Tax Filing Center

Symptoms

When attempting to launch the Greenshades Tax Filing Center, an error message alerts the user that they have not been granted sufficient permissions to run the application.

Cause

The Tax Filing Center has its own update process that is tied into its operation. This update process applies all of the latest government specifications and logic before creating tax returns and thus ensures tax returns will not be rejected.

Since the Tax Filing Center is frequently launched from within an accounting system, it is in some ways reliant on that system to allow elevated permissions requests to User Account Control. The permissions errors described on this page most frequently arise when the Tax Filing Center is not allowed an elevated permission request.

Resolutions

There are multiple resolutions for this problem. Consult with your IT department to choose the best resolution for your environment.

Resolution 1 (Windows 7 and later)

  1. Close your accounting package (This step is just for the active user; you do not need to ask all other users to exit).
  2. Locate the shortcut to your accounting package in the start screen, start menu, or desktop.
  3. Right click the shortcut and click 'Run as administrator'. You may be prompted for a password if you do not have administrative rights to your computer.
  4. Launch the Greenshades Tax Filing Center from within your accounting package as usual.
  5. (optional) ask your IT staff to change your accounting package to always run as administrator by altering its compatibility properties .

Resolution 2

Ensure that the user groups that contain the active user have been granted write access to the Greenshades Software program files directory. Note that you may need to grant this access to each user group that contains this user, not just one of them.
To edit group permissions to the Greenshades Software program directory:
  1. Open up Windows file explorer and navigate to the program files directory
  2. Locate the Greenshades Software folder and select "Properties" from the right-click menu
  3. Select "Security" from the properties dialog that appears
  4. Locate each group account that contains the current user's account within the top section labeled "Group or user names:".  If no groups exist, add a new group.
  5. Edit the group account and ensure they have full control to the folder

Resolution 3

Ensure that the user has explicitly been granted write-access to the Greenshades Software program files directory.
  1. Open up Windows file explorer and navigate to the program files directory
  2. Locate the Greenshades Software folder and select "Properties" from the right-click menu
  3. Select "Security" from the properties dialog that appears
  4. Either locate or add the current user's account to the top section labeled "Group or user names:"
  5. Edit the current user's account and ensure they have full control to the folder
